The Important Skills To Acquire

Young children have an insatiable curiosity and an almost limitless capacity to learn. They are natural inquirers, critical thinkers, competent, creative and full of potential. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, our philosophy of teaching and learning is developed within the framework of the Primary Years Programme (PYP), which is a child centered approach.

IB PYP in the Early Years

Experiences during the early years lay the foundation for all future learning. In these early years, the development of the physical, emotional, social and cognitive domains are happening so rapidly.
It is important to support these developments by providing play-based learning experiences in adaptable and appropriate physical and social environments that allow them to inquire to make sense of the world, and to strengthen their sense of agency.

Montessori

The Montessori method of education focuses on the development of the whole child with the emphasis on:

  • independence and life-skills readiness
  • self-directed and hands-on activities
  • freedom within limits
respect for a child’s natural psychological development

Together with IB PYP curriculum, we embed Montessori’s’ Exercise of Practical Life to support the children with basic exercises that provide the opportunity for purposeful work and these exercises assist children in their development; physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally.

Exercise of Practical Life are designed to teach children life skills. They help the small children develop intelligent and responsible contact with his surroundings. They enhance the children’s control over their movements, exercising the muscles of the whole body with understanding and willed purposes.
Exercise of Practical Life includes:

  • Care of self
  • Care of the environments
  • Development of motor skills
  • Social grace and courtesy

Technology

Technology is a part of our children’s lives nowadays. They spend their days with sounds from television, phones, computers and other devices in the background. At SVP, we integrate technology into students’ learning activities. Various children-friendly softwares are used on sets of class iPads to support students with their learning styles and access to educational websites such as BrainPop, Koobits, Starfall, etc. are provided to equip students with valid and secure resources. To support our ongoing and authentic learning, we use Seesaw for Schools to assign different kinds of activities and provide feedbacks to students. Seesaw also works as students’ portfolio; a compilation of students’ work that represents their learning journey.

Parents

Children achieve more at school when their parents are involved in their education and research has indicated that great schools have effective partnerships with parents. We foster a strong and positive relationship with parents through Three-Way Conferences, Parents Morning Tea, Parents as Learners and Parents Support Group. Parents are also encouraged to come into the classroom or contribute to action and service learning projects.
